Many companies give lip service to delivering service excellence. The truly great companies have a crystal clear vision of exactly what they want to deliver and put their resources into coaching and training their people how to deliver it.

I've seen this phenomenon occur in marching band when I was at the University of Arizona. Director Jack Lee had a clear vision for our band to be the "Best in the West" and we all worked hard to help him achieve that vision. All 180 of us were important in the execution of the half time shows and the culture that was established made it obvious from day one that mediocrity was unacceptable.

Our challenge is to set the standards high and clearly communicate to our teams what they are and why executing them properly will help everyone enjoy their jobs more. When it becomes fun, money is secondary. Recognition, respect, challenging expectations all help to take the team to levels where delivering service excellence is second nature.

Share the vision daily and don't let up. Service excellence in an organized, team oriented environment lowers turnover and consistently builds sales.
